Rising from the middle of nowhere, surrounded by water was this beautiful island fort. Discovered by chance while driving through Brittany in France, it literally forced us to stop and explore. We learned that this isolated but magnificent structure had a history. Originally built in the year 800 probably on the ruins of a Roman construction is now a private property , which sadly for us did not encourage visitors . The tide rises twice every day to provide a natural barrier against intruders as it becomes dangerous to step on the rocks surrounding the island. When the tide was low, the walls and the slopes of the du Guesclin fort appeared unapproachable adding to the mystique of the structure. This painting aims to celebrate the beauty of the coastal heritage and the enduring relationship between humanity and the natural world.
